Application pool stops automatically in IIS7
CGI + long POST content / requests = defunct process and 502 page
hi,
we noticed a strange problem / misbehavior of IIS 7.5 + CGI module.
when POSTing long content (50k+ bytes) to an CGI exe, IIS is not sending
the full content to our CGI exe via STDIN.
the length of the content that IIS is sending to the exe is not of fixed size, so it
might not be an buffer size problem, etc!
the cgi exe behaves as following:
1. get the content length of the HTTP header
2. read as much bytes from STDIN as specified in content length
3. do some magic work and exit
as not all bytes are forwarded by IIS / CGI module to our exe file,
the exe file / process is running "forever" and is not returning
any content. the process is killed after some minutes (timeout).
any suggestions / hints / etc. ... thanks in advance
regards,
mherderich
Web deployment task failed. Max number of connections
On a new Windows 2012 Server installation we have got the following error when users did Web Publish from Visual Studio 2012:
Web deployment task failed. (The maximum number of connections for this site has been exceeded.Learn more at: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=221672#ERROR_EXCEEDED_MAX_SITE_CONNECTIONS.)
It occurred when a number of Web deployments had been done. IIS restart did not remove the error. Restart of server did remove the error for some time before it occurred again.
The reference to the Learn More link does not list this error.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
w3wp.exe site id argument ignored on Windows 8.1
Today I had the pleasure to discover an problem which actually is an showstopper for me. The W3WP.EXE that comes with Windows 8.1 started in-debug mode still supports, but does no longer actually use the -s <SiteID> argument. It does not even notice, when I enter an absolutely wrong ID. As long as it foms a valid number, the W3WP.EXE starts a web server. Unfortunately, it will always be the default Site ID 1, not the one you passed.
A quick check can be done by trying an Site ID number like 4711. If you get the message that the Site ID does not exist on your system, then it probably works. If not, then you got a problem.
Any idea how to work around that mess? I need the debug mode to start to different app pools/sites, because of different .NET frameworks.
IIS request time limit
Greetings.
Monitoring my requests in IIS panel, there are some that take up to several minutes. You can see that in the Time Elapsed column in the attached pictures.
However, i haven't been able to find a setting which will limit those requests. You can also take a look at the process settings.
Any idea how to make IIS not to exceed a specified number of seconds for each request?
Thanks

w3wp.exe crashes unexpectedly
Hi All,
Recently we migrated our production environment from 2008 to 2012 server. Before doing this we migrated our testing, pre-prod environment to 2012 and everything was woring fine. Once we moved to 2012 server in our production environment, We started to face the App crash in our production environment occassionally (on average 3 times a day). I have pasted the information that i received from event viewer and corresponding information from crash report. The error is pointing to KERNEL32.dll. I doubt whether there is any update missing in the system. Can any one help me in resolving this and help me identify the root cause for this.

WCAT XSL Doesn't Render in IE9
I am using WCAT 6.4 x64 with IIS Express. When I try to view log.xml in IE9, it just displays as messy text. Using the Developer Tools, I can see in the console that when the file is loaded the error is reported, "XSLT8690: XSLT processing failed." On StackOverflow this problem was explained as a result of the way IE9 deals with XSLT: more strictly than previous versions. Poster Maestro13 notes:
"IE9 applies MSXML6 by default, and a lot of things have changed with respect to MSXML4. When there's a plain error in the XSLT, it's not reported - IE9 seemingly skips processing onto default text() templates, which results in presenting all text nodes. Worse, when something is done in the XSLT that is prohibited by default in MSXML6, the same thing happens. So what's prohibited by default in MSXML6? A lot! Applying Jscript for instance. And DTD's. And the document() function won't work."
WCAT's report.xsl contains quite a bit of javascript, but when I removed it I still got the error above although I didn't find occurrences of the others mentioned.
I can view log.xml by using Developer Tools to switch to IE9 compatibility mode, but it is a hassle to have to do this every time. Does anyone have a better solution? Will report.xsl be updated to function with IE9 soon?
Hosting WCF in IIS
Hey community,
got a problem.
I created an WCF-Service with Visual Studio.
I got 2 problems with hosting this WCF.
First:
I started the IIS-Manager. And I added the application to my Default web page.
I changed the pool to Default App Pool.
Now when I browse it, I get the following message:
"HTTP Error 404. The requested resource is not found."
This message appears since today, but I changed nothing ...
Im a bit confused, because of that.
The second problem:
My mate wrote an DLL for me. I added it to my WCF-Project, because I need it.
Before today, when I "browsed" my WCF in IIS, I got the message that it can not find the DLL.
I looked for that in Internet and ppl said that I should copy the .dll-file to various folders.
For example system32, SySWoW64/inetmgr/ or something like that.
But nothing worked. I always get the message that it cant find the dll.
I copied it more or less to every directory that makes any sense to me.
Does anyone have any ideas ?
Thanks for your help

Web Deployment Tool - Error: An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.
Hi,
I have am attempting to create an export of a IIS 6 configuration using the IIS web Deployment tool 3.5. The server is a 64bit Windows 2003 and IIS is running in 32bit mode because we run some .net 1.1 applications which are being retired when we migrate to
our 2012 server.
I can run the dependency test but when I attempt to run the config extract I get the following error:
Error: An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007000B) Error count: 1.
This is the command that I am running.
msdeploy -verb:sync -source:metakey=lm/w3svc -disableLink:contentExtension -dest:package=C:\Temp\Sites.zip,encryptPassword=password> C:\Temp\WebDeploySource.log
I was able to do it with no issues on my Windows 2003 32bit server running IIS 6. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Tips on migrating site from IIS 7 to IIS 8 - Web.config guidance?
Sorry for such a long post.
TL:DR Upgraded project to use .NET 4 and run on IIS 8 64bit machine, but throws errors. Suspect web.config is problem.
I have an older application service running on a 32bit IIS 7 I'd like to move to a new 64bit WS 2012 running IIS 8. I updated the project from .Net 2 to .Net 4. Environment is 'Any CPU' and it builds without any errors. But copying over to the new server gave some errors with the web.confi, so I took these out.
Can anyone point me to a guide of what is truly needed to be included in the WebConfig?
I 'think' the problem is our web.config has a bunch of nodes that aren't needed given the new root configuration (?) of IIS 8. I've taken the following nodes out given the errors I've seen.
And if it's not obvious, I am not a super skilled engineer. Small business owner trying to be a little bit more hands on with what I've built.

We still have references to a bunch of assemblies and modules, handlers, etc. We also use a couple custom appSettings, one of which is our dsn database connection. Do these assemblies still need to be added with IIS 8?

HTTP 503 Server Unavailable for certain AppPools - permissions issue?
Hello,
We had something change in our system recently and our dev and test boxes stopped allowing IIS to run.
We now receive a 503 Service Unavailable error when trying to browse our WCF or even localhost.
The issue seems to be tied to permissions because we checked the Event Log and ran the Err.exe utility to decode the number which is a permissions denied issue. We tried switching the user ID the AppPool runs as to an Administrator account and this fixes the issue.
However, we do not want to have full Administrator rights to this Application ID so we want to figure out what exactly was lost/changed.
Any ideas on how to debug this? We looked at the permissions on c:\inetpub\wwwroot and they look like they match one of our prod boxes which is still working.
We think it might be tied to a windows update / security policy change or something.
Thank you for any ideas! We have been scouring the forums and internet for help with no luck.
HTTP 400 (Invalid Hostname) for OWA - Exchange 2010
Hi,
I have an MS Exchage 2010 server (Win2k8R2) that when we try to use the https://servername/owa/auth/logon.aspx?replaceCurrent=1&url=https%3a%2f%2fservername%2fowa%2f URL it will throw a HTTP 400 (invalid hostname). I've check the authentication type and they match. I've checked the Forms service and it's running (though we don't use forms wased auth). I've run wfetch and get this output:

Everything else that is Exchange related seems fine (OWA/ECP/etc), but not this URL. Nothing in the IIS log is very helpful either:

Anyone have any ideas or other tests I can run to resolve this annoyance?
Thanks!

I have a problem with support .json extension. I added right mime type "application/x-javascript" and Handler script Mapping "*.json" map to C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\asp.dll. However, when I try to run below code, into test.json, but the page seems doesn't works because return body of page, how asif he don'trecognise Json tag. Is sufficient create to mime type and handler mapping in order to support fully json extension?
Regards.

4 Billion NonAnonymous Users in Perf Mon on One II8 Setup
We been having issues with Perf Mon jumping up to 4,294,967,294 Current NonAnonymous Users and Maximum NonAnonymous Users on a site install on the server. When this happens we have seen some slowness or people dropping off the site. I am not sure what could cause this and how to track down code that could be creating this issue. I did see a bug in code from IIS 4 days it seems. Any ideas would be great.
Unrecognized attribute 'enableSsl'
I'm trying to send email from a web application over SMTP using TLS, so in the web.config I have enableSsl="true". But delivery fails and in if I go to theSMTP Email settings in IIS I get the error message: "Unrecognized attribute 'enableSsl". .NET 4.5 is installed as well as all updates, and the application pool for the web application itself is set to 4.0.30319.
Any ideas what else has to be done to get IIS to recognize the enableSsl key?
IIS 7.5 Windows Authentication and Forms Authentication
Hi,
I am trying to migrate an IIS 6 intranet site from windows XP to Windows 7 and IIS 7.5. the site uses forms authentication to control user roles, and uses windows authentication to set the initial user id that the forms authentication will use to read the database.
It works running on the same machine, but when I try to access the site from another pc on the same network, they are prompted for network credentials, enter their credentials, but are refused after 3 tries, and receive a 401.2 error.
If i turn off windows authentication the site comes up but no user information is present so the roles are not used.
The application pool is set to dot net 2 and classic, and i tried setting the security of the file folders containing the site to allow everybody, but that does not seem to fix the error.
A plain htm page is able to be seen from another pc on the network.
