w3wp.exe grows to about 1.4 GB stops responding

About two weeks ago our website started to periodically stop responding. Rebooting the server would alleviate the problem for a short period, maybe 3 to 4 hours.  I have been reading and trying to figure out why w3wp.exe grows slowly over this time from 0.25 GB to around 1.45 GB when it stops responding.  I have just added memory recycling at Private Memory Usage 1.295 GB for our website’s application pool and have Maximum Worker Processes set to 1. Memory recycling is good because it should keep our site from being stuck non-responsive for a long period, but it is bad as it loses all our customers session variable (they have to log in again and items in their shopping cart will be lost).

I have been trying to get the Debug Diagnostic Tool working, I am still learning how to add rules and evaluate the dump files. I am unsuccessful yet.

Our server

Windows Server 2016, 30 GB memory, 1 TB HD.

IIS Version "10.0.14393.0"

We run ASP Classic pages that I have been writing since I first started coding our website in 2003. Our data is stored in SQL server, using SQL Server Management Studio v17.3. Our site has been working good and we have not changed much in the last couple months, it just started this w3wp.exe hang and not-responding issue about two weeks ago.

Questions:

What do you think is causing the problem?

Is there a simple test for me to run to trouble shoot this issue?

What software do I need to use to identify what is causing this issue?

Thank you very much for your help.

Tony
